Queensland researchers find overlap in pathology of Long COVID and ME/CFS

Professor Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik and the team at Griffith University’s National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases (NCNED) have found a link in the pathology between Long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

In this article from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Professor Marshall-Gradisnik said “It is the first of its kind in the world to actually biologically identify the overlap in the dysfunction with long COVID and ME/CFS patients.”

Global attention has been drawn to the similarities of patients experiencing Long COVID symptoms and that of ME/CFS and NCNED’s research could help treat people with Long COVID.

As NCNED have a laboratory developed test (LDT) and processes for testing readily available drugs for ME/CFS there is potential to build on that and fast track discoveries and potential drug treatments for Long COVID.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) Queensland branch calls for more funding for research like this to continue.
